Rayshon Reese, who served prison time for 1992 rape convictions, is accused of attacking a woman with a box cutter near a Cleveland bus stop on April 15.CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Cleveland man accused of kidnapping a woman from a bus stop on the city’s West Side andRayshon Reese, 50, is charged with kidnapping, attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault in connection with the incident on April 15.
Reese approached the 59-year-old victim about 5 a.m. as she waited for a bus near West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue in the Ohio City neighborhood, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said Reese held a box cutter to the woman’s throat and ordered her to walk with her arm around him. He told the victim he would slash her throat and kill her if she didn’t obey, according to prosecutors. As they walked west on Detroit Avenue, Reese used the box cutter to attack the victim after she fell to the ground trying to run away, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said Reese then fled the scene in his vehicle, striking a dumpster as he left. Cleveland police responded to the victim at a local hospital, where she was treated for multiple cuts, including to her face. After investigating witness testimony and surveillance footage, police located Reese’s parked vehicle a few hours later near Storer Avenue and West 56th Street. Prosecutors said damage to the vehicle was consistent with hitting a dumpster, and there was a box cutter in plain view inside.“Rayshon Reese can only be described as a dangerous urban predator,” Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said in a statement. “This convicted rapist attempted to kidnap a woman at 5 a.m. from a bus stop and then violently slashed her face with a box cutter when she attempted to flee. Hell awaits this monster.” Court records show Reese pleaded guilty in 1992 to charges of rape, attempted rape, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. He was sentenced to seven to 25 years in prison. His charges stemmed from two separate incidents, according to court records. In the first incident, Reese entered a woman’s home and tried to rape her, according to prosecutors. He escaped through a bathroom window after the victim’s screams alerted her neighbors. While that case was pending, prosecutors said, Reese entered another home and tied up children before repeatedly raping their mother and grandmother for an hour. He threatened to kill the victims when he left the home, according to prosecutors. He was 17 at the time of the incidents.“You got to think to yourself: What else is he responsible for?” O’Malley told cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. “Him being off the streets is the best thing we could have in our community. Probably for the rest of his life.” Reese’s latest charges include sentencing enhancements as a repeat violent offender. He remained in jail Tuesday in lieu of a $1 million bond pending his arraignment in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
