Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe throws the ball against South Florida during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Thus, Fox sports analyst Urban Meyer made Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe the subject of his “Urban’s Playbook” segment. With help from fellow panelists Mark Ingram, Matt Leinart and Joel Klatt, the former Florida and Ohio State head coach listed three ways Milroe could improve as a quarterback.
“No. 2, he’s got to trust the pocket. Great athletes, they have a tendency to bail the pocket because they’ve done that their entire career. They feel pressure. They’ve got to step up in time to take a hit, but deliver the ball. … Last week, he struggled in this book. He feels pressure coming from his left and instead of sliding and stepping up, he gets himself in trouble. He’s got to take it from his feet being the second thing in his progression to the fourth thing.
Meyer added that he thought those goals were easily reachable for Milroe under the tutelage of first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer, who taught former Washington quarterback Michael Penix “to be one of the most efficient, best passers in college football.” Meyer also compared Milroe athletically to one of his greatest stars at Florida in the late 2000s.
