A new landmark study involving the University of Rochester could change how dentists treat pain after wisdom tooth extractions.

Dr. Hans Malmstrom of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health's General Dentistry working on patient Calvin Sam Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025. Rochester, N.Y. — "Doing really well. Eating normally," he explained."That was really the concept, to see how can affect the prescriptions in the United States for acute pain, and hopefully affect the opioid crisis," said Dr. Hans Malmstrom, chair of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health's General Dentistry.

The trial involving 1,800 patients found taking a combination of over-the-counter drugs acetaminophen and ibuprofen was more effective than opioids in easing post-dental surgery pain. "We found basically that the outcome is you have better pain management with less pain with a non-opioid," Malmstrom explained. "So the first few days is the most painful part after you have the wisdom teeth removed, and you have less side effects.""I was very surprised at how well and effective the Tylenol and ibuprofen worked after experiencing discomfort after the procedure," Sam said.

"Five million prescriptions, even in the last year or so, were given to young adults who had their wisdom teeth removed," Malmstrom said. "That's a significant number. We expose them to the risk of addiction."Currently, five million young adults are exposed each year to opioids after wisdom teeth extractions, and are likely to misuse.
