The man accused of killing an off-duty Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office corrections officer in October 2024 is now charged with first-degree murder after a grand jury returned an indictment against him.

Police say Grant shot McNew while hanging out of the passenger window of a car after McNew intervened in a domestic dispute that was caught on surveillance video. The woman police say was driving the car, Makayla Huggins, is charged as an accessory after the fact. She pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday and is expected back in court on Feb. 25.
