Up to five Fairbanks elementary schools could be affected by possible closures in a consolidation plan proposed by the school district.

A decision on the potential closures could be reached by February 2025, according to officials with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.on Wednesday that beginning in January, the Fairbanks district’s school board will begin reviewing a consolidation plan that is “recommended by district administration.”
No specific schools were named in the statement, but district officials said that a list will be included in the consolidation plan release on Jan. 6, 2025, and will include the names of schools and adjustments to school boundaries. The district cited “long-term sustainability” as the key reason for the changes, saying that budget changes, class sizes, teaching jobs, and a declining population in the borough have forced them to come up with a plan.
The plan was first brought up last spring, according to the district, as it gathered input from Fairbanks-area families, and is now in the. The current phase includes working through a school consolidation framework to determine the next course of action, the district said.“We understand how important this process is and the significant impact it has on our students, staff, and families,” Meinert said. “Your voice remains vital as we move forward.
