UP to 20,000 kids and teachers will be swabbed for Covid to check whether the virus spreads within schools.
And medical professionals will also take a blood test at the start and end of the study in 40 schools, to see if participants have antibodies against the bug. “This study will help us better understand how common asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid-19 are so that we can support parents, pupils and teachers and staff, and inform our ongoing response to this new virus.”
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “We know that being in school is vital for children’s education and their wellbeing. Professor Russell Viner, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: “This is a really important step. We need to clearly understand what role children and schools plan in transmission of the virus.
