More than 40 people in two counties fell ill in a spike of Legionnaires’ disease.

No deaths have been reported, but the agency urges people who develop symptoms — similar to the flu and COVID-19 — to get checked out by a medical professional. Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia and causes symptoms like fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle aches and headache. Symptoms typically develop within 14 days and can be treated with antibiotics. However, healthy people rarely develop the disease, the state health department noted. It’s people over 50 and those with underlying conditions who are at higher risk.
The state health department said air conditioning units found in homes “do not use water to cool and are not a risk for Legionella growth.
