The allegations submitted to the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, or CLERB, were summarily dismissed. Investigators say the claims are outside their jurisdiction.
The jails are filthy, often strewn with trash, and people in sheriff’s custody get sick from cleaning up human waste that regularly overflows from aging toilets, complaints filed against the San Diego Sheriff’s Office say.
In all, the review board dismissed 17 separate complaints about conditions inside San Diego County jails, which have experienced an inordinate amount of deaths and negligence lawsuits in recent years. Nora Vargas, who chairs the county Board of Supervisors, did not respond to a request for comment about the spate of complaints about the flawed jail facilities and infrastructure.
“Additionally, Borgen reported mold, potential lead exposure and insufficient privacy in shower areas, where inmates were exposed to others while showering, violating their privacy,” the report added.when it was filed early last year. She accused sheriff’s deputies of serving darkened waffles stamped with faces with exaggerated features that many found racist, comparing them to blackface.
