This article explores a powerful prompting technique that utilizes multiple expert personas to guide generative AI and large language models (LLMs) towards high-quality responses. The author explains the concept of personas, their benefits and limitations, and provides practical examples of how to implement this technique effectively. Learn how to leverage the power of multiple expert personas to unlock the full potential of AI.

In today's column, I showcase a valuable prompting technique that leverages multiple expert personas to guide generative AI and large language models (LLMs) towards high-quality responses. The approach is straightforward: you utilize the inherent capabilities of AI LLMs for persona simulations and ingeniously combine this feature with a focus on the personas as experts in your desired field of inquiry. It's essential to recognize both the advantages and limitations of this method.

This analysis of this innovative AI breakthrough is part of my ongoing Forbes column covering the latest advancements in AI, including identifying and explaining various impactful AI complexities (see [link to Forbes column]). Personas are a powerful feature within LLMs, yet many users remain unfamiliar with the situations where they should consider employing this capability. A persona involves instructing generative AI to assume the role of someone and simulate their knowledge or manner of speaking. No elaborate setup or instructions are required to achieve this. I'll provide you with examples of prompts that demonstrate how this is readily accomplished. One widely used persona involves generative AI pretending to be Abraham Lincoln. A teacher might instruct a generative AI app like ChatGPT to embody the essence of Honest Abe. Students then engage with this simulated persona. In a remarkable fashion, the AI responds as we anticipate Lincoln might have. Of course, this is based on numerous speeches, writings, and other collected materials that offer insights into his character. The AI has computationally analyzed these works and mimics Lincoln's tone and style of expression. Anyone interacting with a generative AI persona must remain aware that the conversation is merely an imitation or simulation. Although the AI often convincingly emulates a person, it's all a computational construct.A clever way to utilize personas is to have generative AI pretend to be an expert in a specific field of study. Imagine you're interested in climate science. You could instruct the AI to act as an expert in this domain. Note that you don't need to specify a particular individual, unlike when impersonating Abraham Lincoln. A persona can be unnamed. If the persona isn't based on a known person, you'll need to clearly state the basis for the persona. I might say, 'Pretend to be a climate science expert.' This alone would suffice to initiate the AI's simulation of that expertise. However, it's crucial to consider whether the generative AI you're using has sufficient data and has adequately processed that data to represent the field of interest. Exercise caution as the AI might appear knowledgeable but lack in-depth understanding. For any expertise you want to base a persona on, a vital question is whether the AI has been extensively trained on that topic. Most major generative AI applications are broadly trained across a vast expanse of the internet. This tends to make the AI so-called 'mile-long and an inch deep' in terms of expertise. It's generally wise to ask the AI about its perceived proficiency in the subject you're exploring. This doesn't guarantee an honest response; you might receive a vague answer or a false or misleading one. If possible, ask direct questions on the topic and have a basis for comparison, such as conducting online searches or referring to existing materials to corroborate the AI's opinions. Another common method to enhance AI's performance in a specific field is to directly feed or import relevant content into the generative AI. Techniques like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and in-context modeling can assist the AI in advancing its expertise on a particular topic. Now, let's combine the concepts of personas, expertise, and the use of multiple instances. If you employ just one persona, say an expert in climate science, there's a high chance the generative AI will present a particular slant to that persona. It might primarily focus on the atmospheric and weather aspects of climate science. While this is acceptable, you could end up with responses confined to that area, potentially neglecting other aspects like the economics of climate science. You can simulate a room full of experts being convened. The instructions to the AI are to define and utilize multiple expert personas simultaneously. This approach can lead to more comprehensive and multifaceted responses, as each persona brings its unique perspective to the table. Remember to carefully select the personas based on your specific needs and the complexity of the topic you're exploring. By effectively harnessing the power of multiple expert personas, you can significantly enhance the quality and depth of your interactions with generative AI
