Lincolnshire joined in celebrating Francis Dymoke's role in the coronation, as he upheld an ancient family tradition and made history for his community
Lincolnshire's very own Francis Dymoke, a 68-year-old retired accountant, continued his family's unbroken line as the 34th King's Champion, a role dating back to William the Conqueror.
The King's Champion role traditionally involved riding into the coronation banquet in full armour and throwing down a gauntlet three times, challenging any would-be contenders. Like the King, he held an honorary rank as Colonel of the county Cadet Force and shared the King's passion for the environment, driving an electric car and planting over 25,000 trees on his estate.Francis faced a near-death experience when he and his wife Gail were trampled by a herd of cows while walking with their dog at their estate in Scrivelsby, near Horncastle.
