The Netflix documentary Unknown: Cave of Bones showcases paleoanthropologist Lee Berger’s discoveries about a hominid species in the Rising Star Cave.
The Netflix documentary Unknown: Cave of Bones explores the 2013 discovery of an extinct archaic human species called Homo naledi. A couple of cavers found hominid fossils in the Rising Star Cave system in South Africa and later showed pictures of the bone fragments to a paleoanthropologist named Lee Berger.
The paleoanthropologist's accomplishments include being named Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Research Officer at Witwatersrand and later the director of Witwatersrand's paleoanthropology research unit following his graduation. Berger had many promotions over the years, and he is currently a research professor in Human Evolution and the Public Understanding of Science at the Evolutionary Studies Institute and the Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences at Witwatersrand.
On September 13, 2013, two recreational cavers — Rick Hunter and Steven Tucker — found a narrow chute that led to the Dinaledi Chamber in the Rising Star Cave. The floor of the open chamber was full of fossils, so the cavers took photos and returned to the surface. They later showed the pictures to Berger and Pedro Boshoff, and Berger assembled a team to excavate the remains, which we now know are from Homo naledi, from the Dinaledi Chamber in the Rising Star Cave system in South Africa.
