Dallas suburb has paid millions in, but service is scant.
Both the city of University Park and the town of Highland Park have approved special elections to allow voters to decide whether each community should remain a member of DART. Mayor Beecherl outlined the considerations that informed Highland Park’s decision-making process, and University Park’s City Council reviewed similar information in reaching its own decision to call an election.
Since joining DART in 1983, the city of University Park has contributed more than $125 million through its 1% sales tax allocation, which today equates to approximately $7.3 million annually. As local sales tax grows, so does this contribution.In 1989, the city of University Park had nine DART bus routes. In 2026, the city has one bus route along Preston Road, and there are no light rail stations in University Park. DART reported that the total ridership for University Park in FY2025 was 46,359 rides, which was down from the prior year, and is 0.13% of the total DART system bus ridership. Cities that are not members of DART are able to allocate their full 1% sales tax locally while still accessing elements of the broader regional transportation network. While some DART member cities have recently chosen not to move forward with an election, University Park remains committed to providing voters the opportunity to weigh in on this decision.Residents are encouraged to learn more about the topic and participate in the election on Saturday, May 2.
