The student government will vote on the legislation at its next meeting on October 25.
The Associated Students of Madison , a student governance group at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, passed a resolution last week demanding the campus be declared a safe space for LGBT students., introduced by ASM Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair Emmett Lockwood, seeks to make the Wisconsin campus a “transgender and nonbinary sanctuary." The proposal follows the lead of similar bills passed by the City of Madison and Dane County, Wisc.
Gender affirming care includes but is not limited to access to sports that match one’s gender identity, hormone replacement therapy, restrooms and locker rooms that match one’s gender identity, gender affirming healthcare- including gender affirm surgeries, and freedom of gender expression,” the group wrote.
Campus police would be instructed to make enforcing such laws their “lowest law enforcement priority” under the bill. “UWPD would essentially need to root out all underage drinking and marijuana usage on this campus before they can pursue any enforcement of laws,” LockwoodThough the proposal is not legally binding, it targets campus leaders, like Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin, with demands to enforce the bill.with the state’s GOP legislature over its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion employee positions.
