The University of Virginia announced the approval of three posthumous degrees for football players killed in a recent shooting.

After a request was made by Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs Rachel Most, the dean for Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry, the College of Arts and Sciences departments and the Office of the Provost approved awarding the degrees. The degrees were printed and given to Carla Williams, the director of athletics. Williams and President Jim Ryan attended the students' funerals.

On Monday, Williams said, “It was a great honor to be a part of presenting these diplomas to the families of Devin, Lavel, and D’Sean.” She explained after attending Davis’s funeral in South Carolina"why earning his degree from the University of Virginia was so important to Lavel. He worked extremely hard for it.”The New England Patriots confirmed to the Washington Examiner last month that the team loaned one of its planes to UVA. The plane was used to transport the football players' teammates to their funerals.
