The University of Illinois Chicago community mourned the death of a junior and track and field athlete who died in a crash along Interstate 88 .was among three people killed in crash involving a wrong-way driver along Interstate 88 Sariyah Watson , who is from DeKalb, died following the collision on Sunday in the westbound lanes of I-88 near milepost 112.25, according to Illinois State Police.
Police said a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes struck another car. Three people sustained life-threatening injuries and were later pronounced dead. Additional details about the collision or the other victims weren't immediately available.
"Our hearts are broken by this tragic loss," UIC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Andrea Williams said in a statement. "On behalf of UIC, we extend our deepest condolences to Sariyah's family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. " UIC Athletics said it is providing support for student-athletes, coaches and staff affected by the tragedy.
