University of Houston debuts new live mascot, Shasta VII
Washington State Fish & Wildlife Services contacted the Houston Zoo last month when a rancher discovered the cubs alone and abandoned on his property – and within a few days, the duo was flown to Texas. At around 4 weeks old, it is unlikely that they would have survived on their own, zoo officials said.
Already, Shasta has established himself as the leader of the two. He is protective of his smaller brother and is the calmer, more confident cub, according to the university. Shasta often sleeps or rests with a paw over his sibling.UH fans on Thursday celebrated the new mascot's"rise to the throne," and many marveled at his personality and good looks.
The not-so-big cat, which some are calling"Baby Shasta," tracked a path to UH that is unfortunately similar to that of his predecessor. Shasta VI and two other cubs were also rescued from Washington at just five weeks old when their mother was illegally killed by a hunter in 2011.
