University Heights voters are being asked this fall to decide whether or not six proposed charter changes should be adopted. The proposals were devised by the city's Charter Review Commission.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Residents will be asked Nov. 7 to decide six proposed charter changes as recommended for the ballot by the city’s Charter Review Commission.Mayor Michael Dylan Brennan and City Council are taking no stance on these issues, allowing residents to decide them without influence. This amendment, if passed, would replace gendered terms and language throughout the charter with gender-neutral and gender-inclusive terms and language.

A Yes vote would update and modernize language in the city charter, while a No vote would result in no changes.Issue 83 would make a change to City Council meetings. If passed, the mayor would be relieved of the obligation of presiding at all meetings. Instead, the vice mayor would have the responsibility of president at city council meetings.

Issue 84 would reduce petition signature requirements by calculating them based on the total ballots cast in the city’s last regular municipal election, rather than the percentage of registered voters in the city. A Yes vote would change the number of signatures required for a ballot initiative or referendum. A No vote would maintain the status quo. This proposal would change the process for recall elections so that the removal of an elected officer by recall election results in a vacancy.
