Quarterback/defensive end Samuel Cooper puts University City High on hisd back and leads Centurions to first San Diego Section football crown
Samuel Cooper put his team on his back, carrying University City High to its first San Diego Section football championship.
University City advances to the Southern California playoffs with pairings to be announced Sunday afternoon. Point Loma sees its season come to an end at 10-3.“All the credit goes to my offensive line,” Cooper said. “They were amazing, amazing, amazing. Our left tackle was hurt, so Cayden Dawson, our tight end, changed his number and moved inside and played left tackle. He was flawless.”
“We had a lot of guys playing with a chip on their shoulder,” Dawson said, referring to a loss to Patrick Henry in the finals last season. Losing last year hurt. So when the coaches asked me to move to tackle, it wasn’t a problem. I played tackle last season and had a week to prepare for this game.”Point Loma countered with a 58-yard TD strike from Maxim Newbegin to Noah Tuberville.
