The number of people on universal credit with no requirement to find work has soared by half a million in a year
Ministers have repeatedly said they want cut the growing number of people claiming benefits who are deemed unable to work , published on Tuesday, shows the number of people on the benefit has increased by around 700,000 in the past 12 months.This group covers people who claim benefits but are currently not expected to work due to several reasons, ranging from caring responsibilities to being in full time education.
Under these plans, the government has announced a host of different measures designed to get more people working.The number in the “no work requirements” group increased from 1.9m to just 2.4m in the same time. In the last month alone, the figure rose by around 60,000. It has overtaken “searching for work” as the largest cohort of universal credit claimants – party due to migration from the legacy benefit system as well as new claims made.
It is also piloting a new service to help people with health conditions stay in work through employment and health support.A DWP spokesperson said: “While inactivity is still lower than in 2010, we are taking the long-term decisions to help everyone who can work to do so, improving lives and growing the economy.
