UnitedHealth Group Inc. has hired a law firm to combat claims made by a Texas plastic surgeon on social media. The surgeon alleges that UnitedHealthcare interrupted her surgery to demand patient information, while UnitedHealth denies the accusations and has demanded the surgeon retract her statements and issue a public apology.
United Health Group Inc. has engaged a renowned defamation law firm, Clare Locke, to counter what it perceives as false and irresponsible social media posts concerning its business practices. This action follows a viral post by a Texas-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Potter, alleging that United Health care interrupted her surgery to demand patient information. \Dr.
Potter claimed in her viral post that she was interrupted mid-surgery by UnitedHealthcare representatives who demanded details about her patient's diagnosis and justification for an overnight hospital stay. She stated she had to temporarily pause the procedure to address the call, only to discover the representative lacked access to the patient's complete medical history, despite the surgery being pre-approved. \UnitedHealthcare vehemently denied Dr. Potter's accusations, asserting that it had previously approved the patient's care, including the hospital stay. The company emphasized that there were no insurance-related reasons for a physician to leave surgery, and doing so would pose potential safety risks. Dr. Potter's attorney, Jessica Underwood, defended her client's account as truthful and vowed not to be intimidated by attempts to silence her. However, on January 13th, Dr. Potter received a letter from Clare Locke, demanding she remove the video, issue a public apology to UnitedHealthcare, and condemn any threats of violence directed at the insurance company. The law firm also instructed her to contact media outlets that reported on her post, requesting they retract her claims and remove all related stories. Dr. Potter responded to the letter by stating that the harassment and intimidation tactics employed by UnitedHealthcare have only strengthened her resolve to speak openly about the state of healthcare in the United States.
