UnitedHealth Group is investing more than $8 million into a consortium of African American colleges to meet the growing demand for data analytics experts
The money will fund the launch of a new AUCC Data Science Initiative, which “will offer technical classes for students who want to specialize in data science or learn data analysis to give them a competitive edge when they look for jobs in their field of study,” UnitedHealthIn healthcare, data is critical to the move away from fee-for-service medicine to value-based models that pay doctors and hospitals to improve healthcare outcomes.
UnitedHealth and its Optum healthcare services business have placed a big bet on data analytics and alsoto an array of employers, insurers and providers of medical care. “Technology in general, and data science in particular, are critical to better meeting the needs of our customers,” UnitedHealth Group CEO David Wichmann said.
There is expected to be a huge need for data analytics jobs generally with the U.S. government just last month to improve data management and related evidence-based policy through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. "Data Scientist work is multifaceted and requires talent from interdisciplinary backgrounds," the U.S. Office of Personnel Managementabout its work in collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget and the Chief Information Officer Council.
