“If they're allowed to continue in their role there we believe that it seriously erodes the Commission's credibility,” Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, said before the vote.

“If [Iran is] allowed to continue in their role, we believe that it seriously erodes the Commission's credibility,” Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, said before the vote.

“The removal of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women is a welcome step toward holding the Iranian leadership accountable for its long history of discrimination and cruelty towards women and girls,” Louis Charbonneau, U.N. director at Human Rights Watch said. “But today’s justified action by U.N. member countries is a far cry from real accountability for those responsible for the security forces’ lethal violence against protesters after the death of Mahsa Amini.

Iran circulated a letter ahead of the vote, signed by 17 other countries and Palestine ahead of the vote. The letter called the ECOSOC vote “an unwelcome precedent that will ultimately prevent other Member States with different cultures, customs and traditions, who are also interested in serving in the subsidiary bodies of ECOSOC.”

China also criticized the U.S.-led vote, saying: “Removing CSW membership of a member state that has been democratically elected into CSW by ECOSOC sets a very dangerous precedent.” Nigeria also voted against the resolution.“We cannot support the blackmail, the politicization of issues at the United Nations,” Nigeria’s representative at the meeting said.
