United Airlines is the first major U.S. carrier to require its flight attendants to wear face coverings while on duty, meaning all 25,000 will from today have to wear either homemade face coverings or commercial facemasks.... [+]NurPhoto via Getty ImagesUnited’s policy, announced on Thursday, extends a previous requirement for flight attendants to wear face masks only on international flights to coronavirus hotspots.
“In coordination with the AFA — starting on April 24 — we will require that all flight attendants wear a face covering or mask to help protect themselves and customers on board our aircraft,” United said on itsPassengers should also be required to wear face masks on flights, according to the letter from the Association of Flight Attendants to the Department of Transportation and the Department of Health.
The AFA also urged lawmakers and regulators to end leisure air travel until the pandemic is brought under control, and for employers to provide Personal Protective Equipment to staff.
