In travel news, united is postponing the debut of an international nonstop flySFO to a city that's popular with the tech sector
United Airlines sparked a lot of buzz in September 2020 when the dominant carrier at San Francisco International Airport said it planned to start flying nonstop between SFO and Bangalore, often considered to be the Silicon Valley of India.
But actually getting the route off the ground has been a challenge. The nonstop has been delayed multiple times, first as the pandemic upended the aviation industry and later due to the Russia-Ukraine War. In August, United said the long-delayed first flight from SFO to Bangalore was scheduled to make its debut in March 2023. A check of the airline's website Thursday, however, showed the first nonstop is now scheduled to debut in late November 2023. But United representatives told the Business Times that's not the case, saying that the route won't debut until the carrier considers it safe to fly through Russian airspace. For now, United is flying just two daily nonstops between the United States and India that don't fly over Russian airspace. Both nonstops go to New Delhi, one from its hub at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and the other from the airline's hub in Newark, New Jersey.. The seasonal service starts May 25, 2023 and is scheduled to run through Sept. 27. "San Francisco to Rome is actually the largest market without nonstop service when we look at San Francisco to Europe," said Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances for United.in 2023, with plans to hire 2,200 people here as part of a companywide effort to hire 15,000 in 2023. Meanwhile, Air India resumed its SFO-to-Bangalore flights on Dec. 2, with three flights weekly, said SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel. On Dec. 15, Air India launched SFO nonstops to Mumbai, also offering three flights weekly to that city.
