Doug and Anna Reynolds have worked hard to preserve the past while offering downtown Ashland a food and drinks anchor on Main Street. This is their story.
ASHLAND, Ohio – It would be fair to say Doug and Anna Reynolds were always close to the idea of starting a brewery in downtown Ashland.
“We wanted to be on Main Street. Everyone has seen breweries revitalize the areas they are in,” she said. At first they hesitated on the site – “It’s too old, it’s too big, it’s too much. Two years later we walked in, finally. I was, ‘Oh my gosh this is perfect,” she said. But demand was outpacing the supply from the start. They opened the week before Christmas 2017 and initially, albeit briefly, had to pare back from seven to four taps. They had to call Phoenix Brewing Co. in Mansfield to bring in some kegs to make sure they had enough local beer on tap, Doug said.Doug said their crowler machine showed up a week before the coronavirus pandemic shutdown, and that was a boon for a brewery that is not reliant on outside distribution.
She added: “It was a hard sell when we opened. People walked in when we opened and said, ‘Where are the televisions?’” Now, in the foyer waiting area, former bleacher seats from Ashland University’s Kates Gymnasium are set up. American flags hang as an homage to Anna being a “bicentennial baby.” And framed newspaper printing plates listing advertisements for Jupiter, a longtime store where Doug’s mom used to work, hang as well. In fact, the brewpub’s Jupiter burger is among the “conversation pieces” at Uniontown.“The biggest conversation piece we always run into is our name,” Doug said.
“I like so many other styles – the Dunkels and the Dubbels and the Tripels and the Quads,” Doug said. “We do them all, all year long.” They balance it out with summer sippers that include Hefeweizen and Shandy among their 18 taps.
