A water main break in Lake Butler, Florida, forced the closure of all Union County schools early on Friday. The incident left thousands without water, prompting the school district to send students home.
Students in the Union County School District were unexpectedly sent home early on Friday morning due to a significant water main break that disrupted water service to the entire city of Lake Butler . The break occurred when a company contracted for road widening on County Road 231 accidentally struck a major water line, leaving thousands without access to water. The outage affected all businesses, homes, the three schools within the district, the local hospital, and all city buildings.
The city manager estimated the water service disruption could last for an extended period, with no concrete timeline for repair. In response to the emergency, the Union County Sheriff's Office collaborated with WW Gay, a renowned water service company, to dispatch multiple crews to the affected area. To ensure the safety and well-being of the students, schools held them until noon, after which they were transported to a designated off-campus location by bus. Parents were instructed to pick up their children from this off-site location by 3:30 p.m. Students who normally rely on bus transportation for getting home were assured that they would be taken back to their homes as usual. Those who walk home were escorted back to their schools to facilitate their return. Teachers and administrators remained with the students until all were safely accounted for.
