The man was charged with first-degree murder and two related weapons offenses

An Elizabeth man was arrested and charged in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place Friday night, law enforcement authorities announced Saturday. The man, Edwin Rivera, 48, was charged with first-degree murder and two related weapons offenses for the stabbing death of Jose Burgos, 56, also of Elizabeth, police said.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Friday, Elizabeth police responded to the 400 block of Elizabeth Avenue after receiving reports of a stabbing, according to authorities. A witness drove Burgos to Trinitas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Colleen Ruppert.
