Reimbursement continued to be the main reason cited for the labor action, one that is likely to affect the region’s sickest children. Hospitals generally must bring in replacement workers to backfill shifts left open due to front-line workers not showing up for their shifts. Hospitals also typically reschedule non-emergency care before, during and after strike periods in order to temporarily lessen an organization’s overall workload.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but it is one that the hospital’s relentless refusal to value our critical work has forced upon us,” Langenstrass said.
