Peter Dutton called on senior members of the Albanese government to publicly rebuke Paul Keating's 'unhinged comments' after the former prime minister lashed the AUKUS submarines deal.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has labelled former prime minister Paul Keating's latest remarks on AUKUS"unhinged comments" that need to be rebuked by senior members of the Albanese government. on Wednesday where he ramped up his fierce criticism of the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.

He also said it was"the worst deal in all of history" and"the idea that we need American submarines to protect us" from China was"rubbish". "I think it is incumbent upon Richard Marles and others to come out today to rebuke the unhinged comments of Mr Keating because they should be taking the advice of the military and intelligence chiefs as opposed to Paul Keating," he told reporters.

"We went with the advice of the defence chiefs and the intelligence agencies not Paul Keating. The AUKUS deal was possible because of the negotiations that took place. "He is entitled to have his point of view and one thing he does is he leave you in no doubt what he thinks," Mr Shorten told Victorian political reporter Simon Love.

Mr Keating said it was the worst international decision by an Australian Labor government since Billy Hughes' bid to introduce conscription in World War I.
