The official unemployment rate increased to 34.9% – from 34.4% – in the third quarter of this year, an increase of 0.5 of a percentage point from the second quarter
Statistics SA on Tuesday released its latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey which also stated that the expanded unemployment increased by 2.2 percentage points, from 44.4% in the second quarter to 46.6%, in the third quarter of this year.
Also, youth aged 15 to 24 and 25 to 34 recorded the highest unemployment rates of 66.5% and 43.8%, respectively. “The official unemployment rate among black African women was 41.5% during this period compared to 9.9% among white women, 25.2% among Indian/Asian women and 29.1% among coloured women, 4.2 percentage points higher than the national average for females” she said.
