- Summer is nearly here, meaning it’s a great time to add fun colors to your garden or patio. Chief Meteorologist David Paul joined PC Brown of PC’s Nursery to gather some great gardening tips. “It’s getting hot, so we’re trying to make sure we choose some plants that are going to be heat-tolerant,” Brown said. If you decide to plant in a pot or planter box, Brown suggested following the ‘Thriller, Filler, Spiller’ technique. A ‘thriller’ plant should be sun-loving and grow well in the heat. ‘Thriller’ flowers will be the main decorative element, so they should go in the middle or toward the back, depending on the placement of your pot or planter. Next comes the ‘filler’ plants, which are used to fill space around the first flowers. They should be medium-growing flowers which are also heat-tolerant.‘Spillers’ are sun-loving plants that trail over the side of the pot or planter, allowing for a pleasant-looking spillage of foliage. After you’re satisfied with the design of your planter, Brown suggested using a 6-9 month slow-release fertilizer to keep your flowers healthy and fed.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
