They’d been in their twenties when they were lowly staff members on Gary Kubiak’s first Texans coaching staff in 2006. When Ryans made the switch to middle linebacker in OTAs as a rookie, Saleh was a defensive quality control coach — the same coaching position Ryans held when he joined their staff in San Francisco in 2017.
“Gary was the first coach that I’d been around that wasn’t just yelling and screaming all over the place,” Saleh said. “You could be a successful coach by being yourself. Whatever yourself was, just be yourself.” He’d enjoyed helping players like Cushing. Ryans said developing players was “the only reason I got into coaching,” and when Kyle Shanahan, who’d been a wide receivers coach on that 2006 Texans staff, was named head coach of the 49ers in 2017, Ryans joined Shanahan’s staff as defensive quality control.
“I think in that type of atmosphere, you’re all trying to prove yourself,” McDaniel said. “I think you’re recognizing that it is a youthful opportunity for the collection of us, and you just knew how prepared you had to be for anything because you didn’t want anybody to have to bear the hardships of messing up because of you.
