This article explains the BUN/creatinine ratio blood test, its significance in assessing kidney health, and the various factors that can influence its results.

Blood tests called BUN tests assess kidney function . These tests are part of routine health screenings. Your doctor may recommend them if they suspect kidney problems. A high BUN to creatinine ratio can indicate conditions that reduce blood flow to the kidneys. BUN is typically removed by the kidneys, but if they aren't functioning properly, BUN builds up, leading to elevated levels. Creatinine, a waste product from muscle activity, is also removed by the kidneys.

When kidneys don't work correctly, creatinine levels rise. The BUN/creatinine ratio compares these two substances in your blood. A normal ratio is between 10:1 and 20:1. An elevated BUN/creatinine ratio can have several causes: high BUN with normal creatinine, normal BUN with low creatinine, or both elevated, but BUN disproportionately higher. Low BUN/creatinine ratio results can be due to low BUN with normal creatinine, normal BUN with high creatinine, or both values low, with BUN proportionally lower than creatinine
