The Lawnside Historical Society is launching its first Underground Railroad Summer Camp in June.. It is located in Lawnside, a community of free Blacks first settled in the late 1700s. In 1926, it became the first independent self-governing African-American community north of the Mason-Dixon Line, according to a borough history.“This is the beginning of another avenue for us to tell this story to younger generations,” said Linda Shockley, the historical society president.

“The camp itself is not designed to make anybody feel bad,” said Jacqueline Miller Bentley, a retired teacher, principal, and historical society board member who will lead the camp. “The camp is designed to make sure that students understand that it is courage, and resilience, and intelligence, and determination that made our country and the people in our country succeed.”in what was then known as Snow Hill.
The camp, which is free, is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan Act, a statement said.
