'The combined forces of moderate candidates and a concern-trolling cable news network forced Warren and Sanders to stand back to back.' –SatansJacuzzi on last night's DemDebates
Aidan Smith, one of the key differences between Sanders and Warren is their approach to the party: “Sanders sees himself as a progressive operating within the Democratic Party structure, while Warren sees herself as a Democrat who supports progressive ideals.”
But this isn’t the only difference. Despite being jointly labeled as the party’s progressive standard-bearers, Sanders and Warren appeal to very different supporters. As explained by, polling indicates that Warren appeals more to women, to better-educated voters, and to older voters; Sanders, on the other hand, is favored by the less educated, by men, by younger voters, and by those with lower incomes.
The fact that the two candidates are running on similar platforms but have such divergent bases of support speaks to the broad appeal of progressive policies. Which, in part, is why it’s confusing to see so many Democrats so eager to attack these progressives. At one point Tuesday night, when Delaney was lambasting “impossible promises,” Warren herself articulated this confusion, saying, “I don't understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can't do and shouldn't fight for.”This wasn’t just on the other candidates, either.
For progressive voters eager to analyze the differences between Warren and Sanders, the first night of the second debate was a bust. The combined forces of moderate candidates and a concern-trolling cable news network forced Warren and Sanders to stand back to back. If there is any takeaway for voters trying to pick between these two, it’s perhaps a difference of style.
