Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman agrees with fans' desire to see Picard spinoff Star Trek: Legacy happen.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman thinks that fans' "appetite" for Star Trek: Picard's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, is "undeniable." Goldsman co-created Star Trek: Picard and he was the co-showrunner of season 2. The Academy Award winner also co-created Strange New Worlds as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. Strange New Worlds season 2 premieres June 15th on Paramount+ just weeks after Picard wrapped up its third and final season.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with CinemaBlend, Akiva Goldsman was asked whether he could make any of the same "moves" to get Star Trek: Legacy greenlit as he did with Strange New Worlds. Goldsman responded that he is fully in support of Star Trek: Legacy happening and continuing where Picard season 3 left off. Read his quote below:
Well, I think what Terry did with Season 3 is so extraordinary, and I think that the appetite for it is, I think, undeniable. So certainly, I am a huge advocate of some version of that continuing. It was so spectacular, I think, what he did. And so, you know, right now, there's no pitching of anything. Right now the world is uh shut down [due to writer's strike]. But, you know, I would really hope– let me put it like this: I signed the petition [for Star Trek: Legacy] too.
Fans Will Have To Continue To Wait For Star Trek: Legacy Announcement Unfortunately, as Akiva Goldsman pointed out, no work - not even pitching - on Star Trek: Legacy can take place currently because of the WGA writer's strike. The Writer's Guild of America is protesting for better compensation from studios and streaming services, and the strike has now been going on since May 2nd.
The "petition" Akiva Goldsman referred to is a fan movement for Star Trek: Legacy to be greenlit that is nearing 60,000 signatures, including Strange New Worlds' co-showrunner's John Hancock. Star Trek: Picard's showrunner Terry Matalas and his creative team are reportedly ready to get right to work on Star Trek: Legacy, and the cast of Star Trek: Picard has also indicated their desire to continue.
