Despite having the seventh-lowest ERA in the league, the bullpen played a big role in the Rangers’ historic meltdowns.
Instead, the Rangers ended up in two places: in the loss column for the second night in a row and on theFrom a Rangers perspective, getting swept this past series in Baltimore was defined by the moments that could’ve swung each of the team’s three losses. In the first two losses, the Rangers had two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the chance to win, but each time, closer Joe Barlow blew the lead.
“I think it’s just about keeping those guys confident,” Woodward said about a bullpen that has the seventh-lowest ERA in the league at 3.35, “and knowing, ‘Hey, you guys are still the strength of our team.’ Where nobody’s panicking in here. We just have to execute a little bit better.”In Woodward’s mind, the decision for Barlow to throw a first-pitch curveball to Odor with two outs in the ninth of Tuesday’s game made no sense.
Woodward, like he did with the rest of the bullpen, expressed confidence in Barlow even after back-to-back blown saves.
