Despite budget cuts, the superintendent of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District is excited for the year ahead.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Though the Legislature overrode the governor’s veto of education funding, Dr. Randy Trani, superintendent of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District, says that the uncertainty of the budgeting is a challenge in Alaska.

“I hope that the legislature can move forward with something that would provide us with more certainty,” Trani said. “I know that speaking with other superintendents, we all would appreciate having more certainty, rather than the situation where we find ourselves, where we’re making decisions, you know, like now, in August, as the school year is going to start.” He also wanted people to remember that due to the reduced budgets overall, the district cut 159 positions and between 15 and 20% from all the other budgets.“We’re launching it for the first time this year,” he said. “It’s in conjunction with the Mat-Su Central. It’s a statewide homeschool program that we have here in the Valley. It’s been in operation for more than 50 years, but now we’ve combined that with a new school that they co-occupy the same building in the Hybrid Learning Academy. “Students who are enrolled in correspondence school can also take courses for free at the Hybrid Learning Academy. And so ... they’ll be able to kind of have the best of both worlds.”Tsunami warnings issued for western Alaska after M8.8 earthquakeThree workers injured in fire at North Slope ConocoPhillips facilityMurkowski keeps governor bid openIn Depth Alaska: Looking ahead to the school year in the Mat-Su
