North Carolina chancellor Lee Roberts gave a telling update on the future of head coach Hubert Davis following a loss to VCU.
for the second straight year after giving up a 19-point lead to VCU en route to an 82-78 overtime loss. Following the game, head coach Hubert Davis was asked if North Carolina needed to make a significant change in order to meet the program's lofty expectations.
"That's a big-thinking question. I apologize, I'm just not there right now. Just really sad that we're not continuing to play and to move forward because I have loved and enjoyed this team," he said."I enjoy and love all of them, but I've just really enjoyed coaching this team. I really wanted this group and these kids to experience more."When asked if he would be back as the team's head coach, Roberts made it clear Davis still has his job – as of now – but his future is still up in the air., North Carolina would own the coach $5.312 million if he were to be fired on April 1. His deal runs through June 30, 2030 and in addition to his $1,250,000 annual base salary, he is earning $1,800,00 in supplemental pay for the 2026 contract year. The supplemental part of his compensation increases by $100,000 in each of the remaining four years left on the contract. He also earns $50,000 in annual expenses from the university and has separate yearly payments from Nike and Learfield Sports .
