The Blitzboks are through to the Hamilton Sevens quarter-finals after topping their Group D with a clean sweep of victories against Canada, Spain and Argentina. | Sport24news
After opening their account on Friday evening against the North American outfit in a 34-5 win courtesy of a hat-trick from speedster Shilton van Wyk, the SA Sevens outfit stuttered to a 19-12 victory over Spain on Saturday.
A pointless first half saw the Blitzboks storm to three tries early in the second stanza through Dalvon Blood, Selwyn Davids and Shaun Williams before Spain responded with two tries of their own before the full-time whistle.SA went into half-time with a five-point lead over Argentina following tries from Dalvon Blood and Christie Grobelaar, but the South Americans, true to their nature, fought back early in the second half.
Luciano Gonzalez dazzled his way through the South African defence to give Argentina the lead before Santiago Vera Feld added the vital two points from the conversion, which made for an entertaining finish to the game. The Blitzboks were not going to lie down and surrender as the ever-present Zain Davids trotted over the try line to ensure SA moved on to the quarter-finals unbeaten with a 17-14 win.
