JOHOR BARU: Umno’s decision to seek a royal pardon for Datuk Seri Najib Razak will not affect its relationship with political parties in the present ruling government, says supreme council member Mohd Hairi Mad Shah.He defended the party’s move to ask for the pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The decision to make an appeal comes from the people and Umno members who want justice and liberation brought by the party they supported, which is understandable.
“This is why the party supreme council made a decision to appeal to seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to request for a full pardon,” said Mohd Hairi. The Umno supreme council announced last Friday that it would be seeking an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to present an application to consider a royal pardon for Najib.
Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli, who chaired the five-member bench, was the dissenting voice who stated that Najib did not have legal representation after the counsel of his choice, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, had refused to represent him further in the final appeal.Najib’s lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has said the dissenting judgment will be used to support his client’s application for a royal pardon.
