Sunday's Del Mar races have been canceled in anticipation of wet weather and high winds. Racing officials hope racing can return Thursday.
Jockey Umberto Rispoli guided Anisette in a last-to-first run along the rail to win the Grade I Del Mar Oaks Saturday in what was officially the final stakes race of the track’s fifth week of the summer meeting.
“Unfortunately, the forecast calls for substantial rain and winds that appear to be headed our way,” said Del Mar president and chief operating officer Josh Rubinstein. “We are hopeful this will be only a one-day thing for us. But we feel this is a necessary step we have to take.”Meanwhile the British-bred Anisette was a storm in her own right as she became the first double stakes winner of Del Mar’s summer meeting in the $300,000, 1 1/8-mile run on the turf for 3-year-old fillies.
“We got a dream run on the rail from Rispoli and he had the horse to do it,” trainer Lenord Powell said of Anisette’s third straight win since she came to the United States. “I didn’t think we’d be so far back, but she was good enough to overcome that and close ground. Umberto kept his cool.”
