Danai Gurira as Okoye, Chadwick Boseman As Black Panther And Letitia Wright As Shuri Lead Wakandan Army Through A Portal In Avengers Endgame
In a break from the MCU’s continuity, Marvel has just drastically changed a key bit of its lore. Vibranium is one of the essential elements in the Marvel Universe, be it in the comics or on-screen. Now, in a preview for Ultimate Black Panther #20, Marvel fundamentally alters Vibranium’s backstory, giving it a new and sinister sheen.
Ultimate Black Panther #20 will be written by Bryan Edward Hill and drawn by Stefano Caselli. Bast recounts Vibranium’s history: it was created by an ancient alien race, and then sent into the stars. Numerous civilizations have used Vibranium, and Wakanda is but the latest. Furthermore, the creators of Vibranium are soon returning, which could spell disaster. Vibranium Is One of Pop Culture's Most Popular "Fake Metals." Vibranium Has Extraterrestial Origins, No Matter What Universe It Is In Vibranium, the super-metal that has propelled the African nation of Wakanda to technological supremacy, is super-rare in the Marvel Universe. Wakanda has leveraged its status as Earth’s sole supply of Vibranium, using it to protect themselves from outside forces as colonizers enslaved and plundered the rest of the African continent. Wakanda was fortunate when it came to Vibranium. Established Marvel lore says that Vibranium fell to Earth near Wakanda millions of years ago. The first Wakandans found it and harnessed its potential, forging a united society. Vibranium has gone on to become one of Marvel’s most notorious “fake” elements, right alongside Adamantium. This extraterrestrial origin for Vibranium carried over when Black Panther made his MCU debut. The opening minutes of 2018’s Black Panther film rehashed the story of how Vibranium came to Earth. The movie then depicted Wakanda as a powerhouse, with technology far outpacing even so-called “developed” nations in the West. Marvel's New Ultimate Line Depicts a Universe Gone Seriously Wrong Vibranium Has a Much Darker Origin In Marvel's New Ultimate Line Marvel’s latest version of its Ultimate imprint, launched in 2023, updated the venerable line for a new era. In Marvel’s new Ultimate Earth, the heroes are freedom fighters, pushing back against the oppressive Maker and his Ruling Council. Spearheaded by Jonathan Hickman, the new Ultimate line is a dark vision of the Marvel Universe that could have been. In this shocking new universe, even Vibranium is getting a new backstory. Once again, Vibranium fell to Earth from space, just as it did in the MCU or on Earth-616, and once again, the Wakandans found the meteor and built their civilization around it. Vibranium is just as powerful here as it is on Earth-616. Yet Vibranium has a much darker purpose in this universe: it was a tool of conquest. The preview for Ultimate Black Panther #20 implies Vibranium’s creators put a bit of their essence into the substance. In the countless eons Vibranium has been in circulation, numerous species have used it, and its creators have gained vast knowledge in the process. Black Panther Must Now Grapple With the Truth About Vibranium Vibranium's New Origin is Shocking to Long-Time MCU Fans In light of Vibranium’s true origins, Black Panther may be forced to make a difficult decision regarding the element. There is no denying Vibranium has been crucial to Wakanda’s development and survival, but now Black Panther is faced with the knowledge that his country’s freedom and security may have come at a price. Vibranium’s new origin is a surprising one. Vibranium has been a massive boon for Wakanda in both the comics and the MCU, and its new backstory casts a dark shadow over the element. Vibranium is usually portrayed in a very positive light, making Marvel’s decision to change its backstory all the more shocking.
