The Delta series, a workhorse for six decades, will be retired following the mission with the Delta IV.

The DeltaIV Heavy rocket as seen during countdown is underway at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida to launch on NROL70.The United Launch Alliance’s final Delta IV Heavy rocket launch has faced yet another setback. Originally scheduled for Thursday but now delayed, the mission will attempt a new launch window on Friday, March 29, at 1:37 p.m. EDT.

This highly-anticipated liftoff will mark a significant turning point in U.S. spaceflight history. The Delta series, a workhorse for six decades, will be retired following this mission. Designed to transport large payloads, the powerful Delta IV Heavy variant is set to carry classified cargo for the National Reconnaissance Office .. However, experts speculate it’s likely a new surveillance satellite.

“The NROL-70 mission will strengthen the NRO’s ability to provide a wide range of timely intelligence information to national decision makers, warfighters, and intelligence analysts to protect the nation’s vital interests and support humanitarian efforts worldwide,” ULA stated. While Friday’s new launch window exists, the mission’s success hinges on weather conditions. The 45th Weather Squadron currently predicts a modest 60% chance of favorable conditions on Friday.
