After fleeing the war in Ukraine, Olena Romanko and her two children now live in San Antonio, where she has opened a bakery.

Olena Romanko and her family gather for Christmas in 2021. They are Ksenija , Victor , Ivan , and Natasha , Olena, Leo , Tatiana , Roma and Sasha .“It's very difficult,” she said, quick to apologize for her stilted English. “I need to focus on this life, I need to focus on my business and on my children. But also the second part of my mind thinks about my past life. We had very nice, good life, family, vacations, everything. Now, I lost everything. In one moment.

After hearing of the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers during the early days of the war, the couple sent Natasha, now 21, to Bratislava in Slovakia in April while she was still able to escape. She lived in a government-supplied apartment with another woman, a stranger, and her children. It was while she was in Bratislava with her two children that, back home, Russian soldiers broke into their home, ransacked it and seized Leo while he slept, taking him to a prison in Crimea where, as far as she knows, he remains to this day.

"I don't know why I did it," Stone said."But it's the right thing to do, and something more Americans should consider doing,"All Romanko said she knew about San Antonio before she and her children arrived here in August of 2022 was what she read about the city in Wikipedia. She's since learned about the Alamo and the rest of the city’s history and said it reminds her somewhat of her home ofO leshky and that she has no objections to the heat.
