After fleeing the war in Ukraine, Olena Romanko and her two children now live in San Antonio, where she has opened a bakery.

After hearing of the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers during the early days of the war, the couple sent Natasha, now 21, to Bratislava in Slovakia in April while she was still able to escape. She lived in a government-supplied apartment with another woman, a stranger, and her children. It was while she was in Bratislava with her two children that, back home, Russian soldiers broke into their home, ransacked it and seized Leo while he slept, taking him to a prison in Crimea where, as far as she knows, he remains to this day.
