Born in Ukraine, the 35-year-old Alisa Balayan moved to South Africa when she was 21. She is a third-generation ballet dancer. Her grandparents were principal soloists in the Soviet Union and her mother followed suit.Balayan said she would like to bring attention to the Ukrainian Association of South Africa to send resources to those in Ukraine and support to those who are fleeing.
"We are all in shock. This has been going on for eight years – the threats from Russia," Balayan told News24 at her studio, Orlovska Dance Academy, in Parktown North, Johannesburg."No one wants this war. It has been quite devastating to see the streets that I used to walk on and my country in ruins. It is quite a shock to all of us."
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, 4 019 287 Ukrainians had fled across the country's borders since the 24 February invasion, and more than 2.3 million had headed west into Poland. In South Africa, Balayan has also created a mural to commemorate her grandmother, as well as the Ukrainian arts which, she says, are suffering in the war.
