Hundreds of Ukrainians poured across a border post on Poland’s edge on Thursday, dragging suitcases and bearing looks of disbelief. “I woke up when I heard explosions, and I didn’t think anything. I just ran,” said one refugee.

MEDYKA, Poland--Hundreds of Ukrainians poured across this usually sleepy border post on Poland’s edge on Thursday, dragging suitcases and bearing looks of disbelief in what European officials described as the first arrivals of a coming wave of refugees.

Poland is already home to between one million and two million Ukrainians. In coming weeks, government officials here expect an additional one million Ukrainians to follow. In Medyka, the bulk of Ukrainians coming across the border were already in Lviv, a city 40 miles from Poland, when Russia's invasion began. Many expected to be safe in the city, the largest in Western Ukraine, but on Thursday explosions were reported in the area and the city's air-raid siren wailed throughout the morning.
