Mariupol has been turned to rubble twice: first by Russian missiles, then by Russian bulldozers.
The area is a blank canvas for plans like these - outlined in yellow - drawn up in Moscow, to turn Mariupol into a model city, to be held under Russian control for decades to come. Since then, Russia has been busy remodelling the city. Posts on social media show bulldozers at work and satellite images confirm their effects.
The word 'children' was written in Russian on the ground outside the building - an attempt to dissuade forces from attacking it.Hundreds of people lost their lives in the place which was once full of laughter and community.Alevtina Shvetsova is another former resident of Mariupol. She has fled to Lviv, in the west of Ukraine. "It's being done deliberately, they're trying to hide [their crimes] and change history," she told me.
The masterplan for the redevelopment was drawn up by the Unified Research and Design Institute of Spatial Planning of the Russian Federation. It is a blueprint for the entire city that runs up to 2035, projecting a rise in population from 212,000 people in 2022 to 500,000 then.
