British-made Storm Shadow missiles have been fired into Russian territory by Ukraine for the first time, a source has told Sky News. Listen to the latest Daily podcast as you scroll.
The UK became the first country to publicly supply Kyiv with longer-range cruise missiles last summer. It allowed Ukrainian forces to hit Russian troops and supply depots far behind the front lines before it launched what would become a limited counteroffensive last year. The decision prompted an angry Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to deem Britain 'at the forefront' of allies 'pumping weapons into Ukraine'.
The five-metre, air-to-air missiles were first invented in the mid-90s by the UK and France and have since been deployed in conflict zones in Iraq and Libya. After being launched by a bomber plane, each missile can travel up to 155 miles and weighs more than a small car.It is designed to hit static, fortified, high-value targets - at a cost of £2m per missile. The missile contains two warheads - the first penetrates through fortifications and the second travels through the hole and explodes.
