Russia says it has succeeded with an offensive in Ukraine's Donetsk region. State news agency RIA cited the ministry as saying that Ukraine had lost four Stryker armoured vehicles. It is the first time Russia has claimed to hit the US-supplied vehicles.

Regardless, the West recognises that Ukraine urgently needs to develop its own national defence capabilities in anticipation of the war's end, and the offer to train Ukrainian fighter pilots so that they are ready to operate western technology is a clear indication of commitment to Ukraine.

The secretary-general insisted that"NATO's policy is unchanged - we support Ukraine." He said that was his chief of staff's message too.
